Ciampino has been flying since 1916, which makes it one of the oldest airports still in continuous operation anywhere in Europe. Its official name honours Giovan Battista Pastine, an airship commander who died in 1918. For four decades it served as Rome's principal gateway, handling state visits, charter fleets and the traffic of the 1960 Olympic Games from a single runway. Fiumicino assumed the intercontinental role in 1961, and Ciampino settled into a second life as the capital's low-cost and executive terminal, fifteen kilometres southeast of the historic centre.
